[Dec. 30th, 2004|01:34 pm]
It is the next to last day of the year and I am about to go out in a bit. It has been raining all week and I have not had the opportunity to do much this week because of the foul weather which has wreaked havoc throughout the state of California. Topped with the fact I have had a very bad toothache this morning, it has been a pretty bad day. I went to have breakfast with Wendy at Baily's this morning which we do from time to to time but afterward, my tooth started hurting really bad. Some orajel and a few tylenols later the pain has really subsized but I have to go see a dentist, I may have to have him plug some cavities or worse have a root canal. I guess I regret all the candy I had halloween and over the holidays.
My talk with Wendy was good though, we had discussions about such topics about pornos (she is disguisted by them but I don't see the corralation between them and violence with exception of the real hard core and violent stuff) and we talked about Nick. He really needs to get a job because all he does is wake up late and is very lazy. He is not even going to school anymore and he acts like the world owes him something. Such is not the case, and to prove my point I told him that he is going to have to fork over $10 a month for the internet bill if he expects to use it as much as he has in the past. If he went to an internet cafe he would have to pay by the hour so I am sure he could scrounge up $10 a month if he really applied himself. I don't think that is being very unreasonable. Yadi and vero invited me to a New Year's party, but I had already made plans to hang out with Rafael so I will probably skip out on that, you can't invite someone a day before New Year's and expect them to be available. Much less if you do it via yahoo. Well, I hope everyone has a good start to 2005. I know I will. I just pray that I am more creative and that I have the strength to get work done.

BBQ [Sep. 23rd, 2004|09:24 pm]
[mood | happy]
[music |"More than This" from Lost in Translation soundtrack]

I was thinking back to the BBQ on saturday, my friend picked me up and since he is mexican he was watching the De La Hoya fight. I have to admit even though I am not a boxing fan I had a lot of fun, it was fun to hang out with Sammy, Chris and people from school and to get out and stay out late. I have not done much of anything except for school work lately so it was a great change of pace and Gerri is a metal head so we were listening to some cool metal in the car, I really am sick of riding in people's cars and having to listen to hip hop! It was cool to be out with metal heads since Chris likes metal too. We got hungry and ended up at some taco joint at 1 AM and I had the best food and a coke imported from Mexico. I swear Mexican Coke tastes so much better than American (is it because they put more sweet syrup in it?) Well the reason I bring up the BBQ is I met a guy that was a lot like me, he says he is an adult but his room is peppered with Spider-Man stuff and he is a big Spider-Man fan. We were discussing the clone fiasco and how it sucks that Kane was killed off so soon because he had the potential of being a superb villian. I had not bought comics in a while since I have been broke but today I picked up a copy of Gambit #1 and Wolverine #18. Gonna take it easy, read them and hopefully they will inspire me to complete my second Ghost Head script this weekend.

school et al. [Sep. 23rd, 2004|09:05 pm]
This coming weekend I am trying to catch up with writing. Can't believe how long it has been since I updated. Lots of changes taking place: even though the car is still jacked, I may finally have enough cash to fix it in a couple of weeks, assuming that it is fixable. It may just need a new battery or it may be ready to be junked, guess I will find out. I am going to a conference with school next weekend in Lake Arrowhead, I am really happy about that. Samantha, Ray, and a couple of people from school are also going. Tomorrow even though it's friday I have to go to a scholarship luncheon, I am never one to turn down a free meal. I have to start bucking down and studying math because my first test score was good but this last one wasn't so hot, mostly because I didn't have much time to work on the word problems. Also, I am excited over the fact the newspaper is coming back to mt.sac so I can finally start writing for them next week so that I can have some new clips for a stringbook for job purposes. I need to whip up another Ghost Head script, I have been emailing them to my co-worker Josh and he is good at critiques, Rafael for one never reads them. He is not so good at that. Life is good for now

time moves rather quickly [Sep. 12th, 2004|01:56 pm]
...I can't believe that only a week ago I was swimming in the Kern river with Lopez and camping, it feels like yesterday. It was a great getaway and then I had a hard week catching up with work during the short week but I managed to get everything done and got a good score in my math test. Today is Sunday and football is back, now all I need is for the weather to change and I will be loving it. It was a good weekend, we had our staff meeting on friday and had pizza and then Jerry came over and we went to Applebees for dinner that night like old times with Wendy. Yesterday we commemorated the 3rd anniversary of 9/11. That is what I mean by saying time moves quickly. Today the Chargers beat the Texans and Pittsburgh beat those pathetic Raiders. Life is good at the moment.

the long holiday weekend [Sep. 3rd, 2004|02:06 pm]
I was planning to get some writing done this weekend but then I remembered that I had told my friend Luis Lopez that I would go camping with him and he called me about a week ago saying he reserved 3 days on the campground for us and that we would be leaving today, I am going to meet him at his office in pasadena, I packed my math book so I can work on problems and my chess set so I can avenge the recent losses I had with him during our last chessic bouts. I think that it's going to be a fun weekend and am looking forward to some relaxing downtime as well. When I get back I am going to be quite busy at school and luckily I get paid next friday bc I really need cash

[Aug. 28th, 2004|10:46 am]
Thursday was my brother's birthday so he came over with the kids and we had cake and ice cream. I was really glad they came thursday and not wednesday because I was really tired wednesday following work and my two classes. The U.S. Olympic team lost to Argentina and are now out of gold metal contention, the best they can do now is win bronze. I was really dissapointed about that. Today I am going to go to the library to work on my math homework but I did manage to pick up the latest issue of Spawn yesterday. From now on I am going to buy just the titles which are available at my local bookstore because it's too much hassle to try and hunt them down at other locales. They are SPAWN, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and WOLVERINE.

weekend [Aug. 22nd, 2004|06:53 pm]
For the most part, the weekend went well. I am trying to rest up on a sunday night for the long week ahead. I missed Mari's birthday party last night because I could not drive there and didn't find a ride but Maricela dropped by for a visit from Tampa. I had not seen her in over five years and even though she looks the same, she is older and is working at a hospital. She said that she was happy to see old friends but after a pit stop here she was going to Vegas. Wendy and I had pizza with her and then we went to a kareoke bar because her friend Amy was getting together with people to celebrate her birthday. Friday night I mostly played chess and today I went shopping for some clothes for work and I mostly read "Memnoch the Devil" by Anne Rice. in between doing some math homework. So overall it was a good weekend with the exception that I did not get to finish the Arizona Bones script but hopefully I will get some time to start during the week.

America's team [Aug. 19th, 2004|05:30 pm]
Think again
by Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports
August 19, 2004

ATHENS, Greece – One of the great scenes in the movie "Hoosiers" is the preseason pep rally where the boys from Hickory High are greeted with scorn by their fellow students because star Jimmy Chitwood is not on the team.
Gene Hackman takes the microphone, reminds everyone that they should cheer for who is on their team, not who isn't, and then points out passionately: "This is your team."
America, this is your team.
And you know what? Our men's basketball team isn't half as bad or insufferable as many would have you believe – including Team USA coach Larry Brown, the anti-Hackman, who would rather rail about deficiencies, no-shows and the flawed selection process than anything else.
Thursday in Athens, the United States pushed its new Olympic win streak to two with a hard-fought 89-79 decision over Australia. Team USA's performance wasn't perfect and it never will be. But just as they did against the Greeks on Tuesday, when the game hit crunch time the Americans played tough, played together and played well.
"We feel that we are capable of winning the gold medal and that's why we came here," said LeBron James, who scored eight points and continued to be Team USA's most spirited on-the-ball defender.
Listening to the players, there is an "I think we can" attitude emerging from the rubble of self-doubt that followed the team's opening-game loss to Puerto Rico. These guys are coming together in a, dare we say, endearing way – lots of towel waving on the bench, minimal finger pointing on the court.
Of course, if you listen to talk radio in the States – or to their own coach – you hear about dumb, selfish, immature players.
You hear about who isn't here, not who is.
"That is something we can't change," said team USA forward Lamar Odom. "Only way we can change that is playing our best basketball, be competitive and represent where we come from well."
Considering the egos involved, this team's all-for-one/one-for-all attitude on the bench and in front of the media is pretty impressive.
Want proof? Allen Iverson did not play in the fourth quarter on Thursday. When asked about it, he shrugged.
"Obviously I wasn't one of the guys playing well on the basketball court," Iverson said. "Whatever looked good for us, whatever was effective, I am fine with it even if I am not on the court."
Even Brown acknowledged his team is making progress on Thursday.
"I think they are starting to care about each other and understanding the importance of representing our country and doing the right thing," Brown said.
Of course, Brown immediately went on to lament the selfishness of youth, his miscast team and fate in life as its coach – but we'll spare you the details.
(Brown's best blast Thursday was aimed at Donn Nelson, the Dallas Mavericks assistant coach who is also an assistant for Lithuania. A foreign journalist asked Brown why Nelson wasn't on the U.S. staff. "He has enough trouble coaching Dallas," Brown said.)
It is true that this remains a flawed team. After a 3-for-17 three-point shooting performance Thursday, the United States has now missed 52 of 62 shots from behind the arc in these Olympics.
There was another slow start – the Aussies scored 31 in the first quarter. There were lapses.
But these guys play hard. When they decide to defend, they can simply snuff you out. U.S. ball pressure triggered a 22-5 run to start the fourth quarter, as one example.
They are willing to win ugly with defense, rebounding and floor burns.
So Shaq isn't here. Neither is T-Mac, or Jimmy Chitwood for that matter. But in the last two games, this has been a good team, a likable team.
"We are doing it for the name on our chest," Odom said.
The United States of America.
This is your team.

tired but happy [Aug. 18th, 2004|09:08 pm]
I am really tired, maybe bc I have been waking up a whole hour earlier this week on account of I have to take the bus to work/school until (if?) I get my car fixed. Everything went well in class, I was able to add the two classes so that I could round out my schedule. I am also selling my Sociology book tomorrow to a girl who is taking the class. The new semester is off to a good start but I am so happy the weekend is coming so I can have some time to rest and catch up with everything else. Sergio and I were supposed to go to the Van Halen concert tomorrow night but I don't know if he was able to get tickets.

new idea for script [Aug. 18th, 2004|07:30 am]
I am changing banks, I am closing my account with Bank of the West. This morning I walked over to the ATM and it wasn't working again. I drove up to it just last week and it was out of order,so I had to go in the bank and it happens very frequently. What is the use of an ATM if you can't get money out of it?? I have the idea for the second Arizona Bones script but I haven't had time to write it yet because school started this week. I am taking 9 units so I can take advantage of the scholarships this fall. Maybe this weekend I will finish the script and maybe even have time to play chess. I am scheduled for a tourney in west covina saturday.

USA team loses to Puerto Rico [Aug. 15th, 2004|02:03 pm]
I just saw the men's basketball team lose to Puerto Rico by 19 points in the first game. It pissed me off so much, these guys should be ashamed of themselves, they played like crap and it marks the first time USA has lost since NBA players started to play and the first losss since the 1988 Olympics. The original dream team with Jordan, Magic, Barkley and Magic Johnson scored an average of 117 points a game and these guys score 81 points. It will be hard to believe that they won't dig deep and come back next game strong against Greece, but it doesn't look like they selected the best players. Still, it was an embarassement and a dissapoitment.

playing chess [Aug. 13th, 2004|08:28 pm]
it's a cool friday night. Today is the Opening ceremonies for the Olympics. I am sure that if my dad was here he would be watching it. Wendy is wathing them, that is the difference between me and her. I don't really care about such communal media events, with the exception of the super bowl as a culmination of the football season, but that is an annual event. I actually don't care about the olympics at all save for the basketball team which I hope wins the gold once again.
I rediscovered my love for chess lately and also discovered a good website with an extensive database, chessgames.com. It is the best chess database on the web IMHO. Going to study some variations, read a little and then hit the sack.

going back to work [Aug. 12th, 2004|03:13 pm]
Today is my birthday. It has been another scorchingly hot day in the SG valley today. I walked to the bank and since I was halfway there, I decided to go downtown to have a birthday lunch at Alpha Omega burgers. I enjoy that grease spot and haven't eaten there in ages. Then I caught the bus back home but even the couple of blocks from the bus stop to my house it was hot. I passed the usual watering holes, walked into this Mexican cantina but it was dead, happy hour is at 4PM so I decided to leave since no one was there, I was just craving a beer. Then I walked past this bar which used to be Art's thirsty camel but now changed owners and is some sports place. Decided I didn't want cigarette smoke clinging to my clothes from the bar so I am going to wait till it cools down a bit and see if Wendy wants to go with me to Chili's when she gets back to work.
Maya called me saying that she needs me to go sign my time cards tomorrow and that we start work again at 8am on Monday, I never thought I'd say this but I have been very broke of late and am glad to be going back to work. I need to add an additional 4 pages to my Ghost Head script to make it offical length and I emailed Joe Edkins, freelancer to see if he can review it for me and critique it. Looking forward to chilling with my sister later today.

productive day [Aug. 11th, 2004|05:27 pm]
Today was a productive day in terms of writing my script. I am almost done with it I just need to write the conclusion. This latest script features my new character, Arizona Bones. In his initial adventure I pitted him against the Marvel character Ghost Rider because I thought it would be a neat story, also I can keep the script and send it to Marvel at a later time if they need any stories featuring their creation. However, I am afraid of posting it online because I don't want anyone to rip off the idea so if you want to read a copy just email me and I will be happy to send you a copy. Cool!
It's damned hot and I am not happy about this, I had to go to starbucks to cool off with a tasty caramel beverage earlier and I was lucky my friend was working there and she used her employee discount. Tomorrow is my birthday but I have no special plans, just to fly by the seat of my pants. May go to a movie or something.

bad day [Aug. 9th, 2004|06:36 pm]
Well this entry is not writing related but events have affected my writing so I guess it's relevant. My car died on the way back from mt sac today. Saturday it had been shaking a bit more than usual so I knew I had to tread lightly and was considering taking it to Wendy's mechanic but I had to drive to return some books to the Mt.SAC library today and on the way back it smoked up a great deal. Then as I was driving down Mountaineer road, I hit a red light and the damn thing stalled. It would not start, and I had a green light! Luckily after a few frustrating moments a good samaritan got out of his car and helped me push it off the road and lent me his cell to call Sergio. So am very depressed over the fact I have no car right now, who knows for how long and that is why I have not written my 3 pages which I have committed to writing a day, I will be lucky if I get one done. More on this tragedy later. The only good thing is I should get my paycheck mailed to me tomorrow.

writing the Arizona Bones script [Aug. 7th, 2004|07:38 pm]
Well, I have decided to use my livejournal update from now on to write about my comic book writing career, or about trying to break into comics as Josh suggested. Well, I have been working on a script in which the protagonist is a bad ass character goes by the name of Arizona Bones. Will post a few pages on the website when I am done with it but I was quite excited by how prolific I was today, I wrote 5 pages. At this rate I should be done with the script in less than a week, then I will tweek it and edit it. Another good thing that occured is I found this cool site for creating comics. Check it out, I put a link on the site. That's all for now, will update again soon or when the script is completed.

tv shows of note [Nov. 8th, 2003|04:29 pm]
Well, wow....a second entry in one day, must be some kind of record.
Well I am still a big couch potato so I wanted to give you guys the heads up on what I am watching these days, and see if you agree with me on what to watch. Keeping in mind, I don't have cable TV anymore so all I watch is network TV. All I have time for.

Monday
Monday's are pretty dead when it comes to good TV. I usually watch the occasional M.N.F. game but with the Chargers' abyssmal 1-6 record this season, I have lost some interest.

Tuesday
Also not a rich day. The top pick is NYPD Blue. The guy who used to be on "Saved by the Bell" has turned out to be even better than Rick S. partnering with Andy, and the relationships are cool. Still the best cop show for my money, and they even brougth Kim Delaney back after her failed shows on the alphabet network and tanking on CSI Miami.

Wednesday
the Trek network has the best line up with Enterprise (the Star Trek prequel) having its strongest season to date. Even though T'Pol is often reminiscent of Spock and or Seven of Nine, the show is still well written, Scott Bakula is tailored made for his role, and the arc of the xindi conquest of Earth is interesting, just wish they would have come up with a more ominous name than Xindi for the bad guys. Forget "Smallville," it's too much of a soap these days, just pick up the latest issue of JLA if you want a good Superman yarn.

Angel follows at 9PM on the Frog...Spike joins the cast from Buffy and the gang is in charge of "Wolfram and Hart" which eleminates the need for Cordelia having her visions, this is convenient considering they have written her out of the show this season. Still not as strong or compelling as Buffy but then, what the hell is?

Thursday
I watch friends at 8 P.M. I know I know...but it's really funny and this is the last season.
9 PM The Frog's "What I like About You" is a guilty pleasure and a gem of a sit com. Amanda Bynes is mesmorizing portraying today's teen angst with brilliant comedic timing.

Friday
Bad tv day, since they moved L&O SVU "Friday's #1 show" (according to the peacock hype machine) to tuesdays we're stuck with 20/20 and other news programs. I reminisce about the Moulder network's lineup with X-Files in the early 90's, and "Dark Angel" this decade. Those were some top notch sci fi shows. At least you can get em on dvd now.

Saturday.
The occasional Law and Order rerun is the only redeeming quality of tv's vast wasteland. Better go out or read a book.

Sunday
NFL football, when the games are good, see monday night entry and this is the night to watch TV! The practice has been somewhat revitalized by James Spader but the other additions to the cast pale in comparison to Helen Gamble and the gang. Bobby say it ain't so!!! Law and Orger CI is very compelling and my favorite Sunday night show.

There you have it, grab the popcorn and plant yourself in front of the boob tube. c'mon, you know you want to.

thanksgiving on the horizon [Nov. 8th, 2003|04:21 pm]
Hmm. I have been so busy only updating now before the major events. Halloween was cool. I carved a pumpkin and I was going to go to a haunted house with Dan but it was raining and he kind of flaked on it so Wendy and I bought candy and passed em out to the few trick or treaters that braved the weather. The googlies (my nephews) came in their adorable costumes around 10 pm and stuck around for a bit. I will post pics of em later. The car was finally fixed on Oct.25th and I have been driving it to work and yesterday I went to a Central meeting in Cal Poly. It seems I have been made communications of the group which means that I update the Central yahoo group and email the membership re. events. I have a big midterm for my online class Nov.17 and a math test on Nov.18 so I better get back to doing homework. I live in fear of the car crapping out bc the motor is bad, so I may have to sell it very soon. I am trying to save for a new one.

Almost halloween [Oct. 18th, 2003|05:18 pm]
[mood | discontent]

halloween is the big event of October. A lot has happened since I updated this more than a month ago. My mom fell at work so Wendy Nick and I have been taking care of her. I feel really bad for her bc she doesn't want to be a bother but she really is not, even though she isn't the easiest person to take care of. Her boss has been shuttling her back and forth from the hospital and she has a cast on now. I have been mostly busy at school trying to pass math 51 so I can take math 71 and finally get out of MT SAC. I am sick of sac! My job has been going OK, Jean has been cool lately, maybe bc she appreciates the good job I do and realizes how short staffed we are. I took a bus to JPM comics today which is my nearest comic book store. If you are curious here is the link: JPM Comics if you want to see what the store is like. Thank god for comic books, if it wasn't for them I would have gone insane a long time ago. I love reading them and collecting them even though I probably spend more than the average on them monthly (roughly between 15 and 30 bucks.) But I want to write for them so its OK. It's all a learning process. It has really been a hard month what with the car being bad and the MTA strike, my uncle Beto is working on fixing the car but he is taking his time about it, says it might be ready this weekend but who knows? He said that last week. Wendy says I am making a big deal about driving, but I believe that it is. Besides, easy for her to say she can take off anytime she wants. You can't have any sort of a life in this society without a car. To wit, my social life is as good as dead for now.

weekend [Sep. 5th, 2003|09:04 pm]
This weekend is Rafi's birthday party and we are all excited about it, they are usually good. School is in full swing and I am broke from buying textbooks and supplies. Picked up a copy of Superman/Batman #1 today. DC is getting smart and putting their top artists on the book that reunites their top heroes, and the comic is a masterpiece, the writing is crisp and contrasts the stark darkness of the Dark Knight and the morality and sheer power of Superman. Didn't mind paying almost $3 for it considering the art is superb and it's such a high quality story. From the sheer dealiness of Supes battling Metallo, the villain with the Kryptonite heart to the somber detective work of Bats, this book is pure gold. Been busy researching scholarships of late. Vanessa has entered my life again but I can't figure out what her motivations are, to be a really good friend or maybe more.
People are accusing MeCha of being a racist organization due to the media's exposure of Bustamante's involvement with it in the 70s which is a load of crap. I wrote a commentary about it.
